To maintain consistent standards of excellence in the specific subjects we cover, our tutors work together through online meetings, annual face-to-face or online training workshops, webinars, and use of a detailed 7E Master Tutors’ Guide, which all the tutors have access to.

This is in addition to any subject matter experiences and professional teaching qualifications the tutors have, for example Qualified Tutor Status (QTS) for secondary school teachers and Fellowship of the UK Higher Education Academy for pre-university and university teachers.

Using accelerated learning principles to teach so that students learn with multiple intelligences

7E Master Tutors develop expertise in using accelerated learning principles to teach in such a way that students understand core concepts of a subject through different intelligences, for example verbal, mathematical, visual, and active involvement in doing related learning tasks and exercises (kinesthetic intelligence).

For this, we adapt the six-step M*A*S*T*E*R Mind approach explored in Rose & Nicholl (1997)’s Accelerated Learning Principles, to the different subjects. These six steps are:

• Motivating each learning session so students see the benefits of mastering the topic
• Acquiring the right information for effective learning of topics
• Searching for meanings of concepts taught
• Triggering students’ memory to remember and correctly apply what is learnt
• Exhibiting what students learn effectively through accurate problem-solving, teaching others, and excelling in assessments and final examinations, and
• Reflecting deeply and smartly on their learning.

Supporting tutees with 7E whole-person education skills

The training workshops enable our tutors to develop further pastoral skills in whole-person education of students around some 7Es of education, as appropriate, which students need as preparations for success in higher education and their future careers. These are:

• Expertise: how they become masters of the different subjects they are learning;
• Experience: giving them opportunities to link their learning to real-life examples and their own experiences;
• Entrepreneurship skills: understanding principles for using skills learnt in a subject or groups of subjects to start a business, mainly for further and higher education students;
• Enterprise Development: really establishing a business with the entrepreneurship skills;
• Employability skills: additional skills that make a student more employable, including self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-effiicacy (best ways to be self-organised and more productive), key work skills, problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and more generally skills for students, graduates, and start-ups;
• Emotional Intelligence: a range of soft skills which enable students to understand where others are coming from, and have good interpersonal and communication skills for working with them successfully as a team
• Engagement/Execution: how to engage with set tasks and execute them excellently for top performance, including learning tasks, course-work assessments, summative examinations, and other tasks in one’s career.
